Wow, what an adventure our trip to Koh Samui was! Here’s a 3 minute and a half tour of Koh Samui on video! CLICK here to watch the video. . .

Voting may be over but our journey of discovering Koh Samui has just begun. We know we will be back in Samui again. . .and again. We want to thank all of you who read this blog and made voting for this competition a daily habit. We also  want to thank our media friends and partners who featured us in their blogs, newspapers, magazine, Facebook and TV shows.

We had two unexpected surprises today! Philippine TV’s King of Talk Boy Abunda posted us our Ultimate Thailand Explorers campaign on his Facebook, helping us garner more votes before it ended tonight. Thanks so much, Sir Boy! As we were finishing up our blog entries before midnight,  guess who we saw on TV? Yup, it was Michael and Jenny on national TV. Our mouths stayed open for half a minute, because we didn’t know we were going to see ourselves there! ABS-CBN featured us on the evening news Bandila! Wow! We didn’t really expect that! A big thank you to ABS-CBN, Bandila and Ms. Charo Santos! We will post that video tomorrow. (Update: Pls. Check out the video below!)

We are still overwhelmed by it all. We want to thank you, Philippines! We’re so happy and proud to represent all of you in an international competition. We also want to thank our friends from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and even the US who have given their support and encouragement. What an honor to know you! More so, we’d like to thank the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Born Distinction, the UTE support team and our generous sponsors for giving us this wonderful opportunity and helping us accomplish our tasks! I hope you won’t mind if we continue blogging  in this website. We still have plenty of blog entries about impressions, learnings and observations about Koh Samui and Thailand that will take months to write. We’ll surely be blogging here even after the results are announced!

GOD bless you all!

Love Samui!

Our Ultimate Thailand Explorers Blog!

Welcome to our official site for the Ultimate Thailand Explorers contest!

We are Michael and Jenny Cocuaco, adventurers and explorers set to discover the world together. Join us on an adventure of a lifetime vie for the title Ultimate Thailand Explorers '09 where we hope to get a chance to promote the beautiful island of Koh Samui.

We  are longtime friends and online chat-mates who fell in love and got married just a year ago. Since Jenny was stationed in Manila and Michael was in his home province down south, a big chunk of our courtship was spent online. We communicated via instant messenging and  social networking sites, posting our letters and pictures online.Aside from sharing a deep faith, we both have a  penchant for good food, books, spa treatments,  travel and adventure.

Ten Things We Love About Thailand!

Michael and I both went to Thailand separately in our teens and here are 10 things we couldn't forget about our first visit to Bangkok and Pattaya:

1. The warmth and gentleness of the Thai people.

2. The unique mode of transport called the  Tuktuk, Thailand's version of a motorized rickshaw or tricycle as we would call it in the Philippines. It is so named because of the sound its engine makes as it navigates the busy streets of Bangkok.

3. The wobbly and hilarious Elephant Ride.

4. The kick your taste buds get when you eat Thai Food. Thom Yum Goong, Pad Thai, Chicken in Pandan Leaves. . . I'm getting hungry.

5. The tart and sweet mangosteen, a local fruit.

6. The sights, sounds and smell of the floating market! It is an experience to be in the middle of the river with trade and commerce all around you.

7. Affordable shopping at Pratunam Market!

8. Jetskiing in the clear waters of  Pattaya. As you look down from your jetski, the clear blue waters actually allows you to see the teeming marine life below.

9. The buffet breakfast at our hotel! It was always a feast!

10. The symbolic purple orchid that greets you everywhere.

Our Love Story!

Because of our Ultimate Thailand Explorers video, we have been getting questions about how the two of us met and fell in love. Did we really meet online? How did it happen? Was it love at first "type"?  Since we just celebrated our 1st anniversary, allow us to retell our story to all of you. :)

JENNY'S VERSION

For me, it was love at first sight. I first caught a glimpse of Michael in a singles' retreat organized by our church. It was a  beautiful April day. There was  a Sports fest  that afternoon and since volleyball isn't my sport, I chose to sit at the sidelines to cheer on my teammates. Then one fine gentleman caught my eye. There was something special  about the way he moved and conducted himself during the game. I was struck by his gentleness most of all.

At that point in my life, I was so happy reveling in my singleness that I wasn’t even thinking about meeting anyone. I was content that I was living a purposeful life with God at the center of it. But there I got the shock of my life, after seeing this person for the first time, I blurted to God in prayer that this is the guy I wanted to marry. I didn’t even believe at love at first sight . . . until that point.

And God did set us up. Arriving late at the last session of the retreat, my friend and I sat at the last row of the function room. Before the session commenced, the speaker asked those at the back to transfer to a couple of vacant seats in front. My friend and I hurried to the front. The guy and I landed on the same table, at the same time. Our friend introduced us. Months after that first encounter, I still couldn’t take him off my mind. But then, he was from a far-flung place and we were both still strangers to each other.

Three years later, I saw him again. Two weeks before my birthday,
I woke up and told God that I wish He’d let me meet my future mate before I turn a year older. That night that same friend who I was with at the retreat dragged me to a birthday party of someone I didn’t even know. That was where I saw him again. He didn’t even remember me, but I sure recognized him. Before I left, he caught up with me and said, “It was nice meeting you.” That started a solid friendship that lasted for three years.

One day in November, I was surprised to receive an email from Michael. In a few words, he told me that he read my article in a local newspaper. I was elated, to say the least.  Being miles apart, he in Zamboanga City (in the sourthern part of the Philippines) and I in Metro Manila, the internet paved the way for us to  get to know each other. Since we were both online in our separate offices, we became part of each other's daily routine. We chatted, quarreled and played games online. Once in a while, when time permitted, we met up and traveled with friends.  I'm glad I got to know him as a friend before romance got in the way, because I got to see who he really was as a person.

And then it happened.  October 3, 2007, Michael took me to his hometown and  as we were wading in the ocean at sunset, Michael asked if we could take the friendship to another level. It wasn’t much of a surprise, as I already had an inkling on our first meeting that this day would come. It was worth the wait.

Exactly a  year later, we got married in a garden ceremony in a country club near Taal Volcano (the smallest volcano in the world).  For me, Michael is a great gift, an answered prayer who embodies all  I have ever  wanted in a husband and best friend.

MICHAEL'S Version

There was a time that I thought that I would not marry. I was simply happy doing business, traveling with my motorbike, and day dreaming.

I began to notice Jen about 5 years ago. I read an article she had written for a national daily.  Her excellent article made me want to congratulate her immediately.  My only way of communicating with her was through email because we were part of the same mailing group.

We also began communicating through Yahoo Messenger throughout our friendship.  What amazed me at that time was how honest she was with our friendship-- so honest that there were times I got mad when she would challenge me with her high standards of conviction in the middle of work. Imagine, I  was  way down south in Zamboanga City while she, on the other hand, was in Manila or in far away Beijing!  It was simply amazing that she could affect me that way.

All through out our friendship, I can honestly say that I was myself and she was herself--so ourselves that I personally stepped using the wrong foot first. . . almost everytime.  And I think that helped us build a great foundation of trust in and through Christ. I really got to know her that well.

One day while I was doing my weekly routine of swimming in the river,  I had a very clear epiphany.  I normally swim with the boys on early weekends; but for this weekend, I was alone.  The rain just fell and the water was high.  The higher than usual water did not deter me from still jumping in.

"It's no fun being alone noh?"

I heard that still small voice speak deep inside of me.  And I can not argue the truth it communicated to me.  Instantly,  I knew that I would like to marry and there was no one else in this world that I would like to spend my life with except Jen.

I told myself that the woman  marry must be capable of doing the adventurous things that I love: motorcycle rides, mountain climbing, river swims, and diving. I never thought I could find one special girl who could all that-- anytime, anywhere! I could not think of anyone else but Jenny! From the rough bike rides, to rugged jungle trails, river swims and deep sea diving, Jen was always game. I got to know her better during those times, with nature as our backdrop—the perfect setting!

Time came when I decided to let Jen know that I wanted to make her mine, and I wanted to do it in a place that we will always remember. I didn’t like to do it in a restaurant or any common place. I wanted to tell her what was in my heart while we were swimming at sea near sunset.

I fetched her straight from the airport. And lead her to one of the nicest beaches in my hometown. The trooper that she was, she never had second thoughts about taking a dip with me. It was a perfect afternoon. The water was calm and there was nobody else on the beach but the two of us. We swam and talked in the water.

It was the perfect moment: there was nothing to distract us. Instead of just saying yes, she gave me a challenge I can never forget! She asked me to recite to her by memory the whole chapter of the Bible's Matthew 5. Out of my love for her, I was able to memorize the 48 long verses in 3 weeks! I finally married her last October 2008 and we have had so much fun exploring the world together.

P.S. It's only a week before they announce the semi-finalists for the Ultimate Thailand Explorers. Hope you can help us by telling your friends to view the video here: http://bit.ly/qt0s

Thailand Reaches Out to Philippine Typhoon Victims

Yesterday, we met up with a  friend whose house was ravaged by Typhoon Ondoy. He told of how their whole family, including two toddlers, escaped the floods that reached the 2nd floor of house by climbing down a wall and wading through the chilly waters, before safely reaching  higher ground. They were thankful they didn't suffer any injury as they plunged into and walked barefoot on the muddy water.  A the two killer typhoons have claimed more than 600 lives and untold millions of properties damaged.

As the Philippines is trying to recover from this onslaught of calamities, we find a glimmer of hope in the outpouring of support from our own countrymen and even foreign governments and organizations. Yesterday, amidst the bad news that greeted us in the front page of our favorite daily, we chanced upon a article that warmed our hearts.

IT READ:

The Thai government, through the Royal Thai embassy in Manila, is extending assistance to the victims of tropical storm "Ondoy."  The donation of the Thai government will arrive on board a special Royal Thai Airforce C130 aircraft tomorrow at Villamor Airbase in Pasay City, consisting of more than 100 metric tons of rice and 50,000 sets of medical aid amounting to a total of five million baht ($150,000), together with a medical team of 20 doctors to assist evacuees in various affected areas around the country.

The Royal Thai Embassy, together with Thai Airways International, is presently coordinating with various organizations and the National Disaster Coordinating Council in facilitating the donations. Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadejm Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, and Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya have sent their messages of condolence. "On behalf of the government and the people of Thailand, the Royal Thai embassy shares with the Filipinos the hope for the speedy recovery from this tragic disaster," the embassy said in a statement." In collaboration with the Airline Operators Committee in Bangkok, Thai Airways will be flying in assistance consisting of canned goods, dried food, clothing, blankets, and medicine donated by Thai Airways and AOC member-airlines operatiing into Bangkok's Suvanabhumi Airport. The first lot of aid is expected to arrive in Manila on Oct. 12.

Nivat Chantarachoti, general manager for Thai Airways in the Philippines and Guam, expressed condolence and sympathy for the Filipino people. We have been operating in the Philippines since 1962 and this is the worst flood ever. I have conveyed the situation to our head office for assistance and support as some of our own staffers were also affected by the typhoon. Donation centers have been set up at both the Thai head office in Bangkok and Thai's Operation Center at Suvanabhumi Airport until Oct. 20,"Chantarachoti said. Thai Airways haas been actively involved in supporting various fundraising activities for typhooon victims such as the recent "Hoy Hoy Ondoy" fundraising concert at the NBC Tent in Taguig City by donating two business class tickets to Bangkok for auctions.

-- from the THE PHILIPPINE STAR  Oct. 11, 2009

We would like to say thank you to the Thai people for helping our brethren in this time of need.

The Making Of Our Audition Video

We get queries about who filmed our audition video for the Ultimate Thailand Explorers. They scratch their heads when we say that we took it ourselves. Yes, really.

We took it with  our DSLR camera, a  folding chair and a trash can--which served as our improvised tripod.  We couldn't bare the shame of asking someone else to film us doing our crazy spiels. Not only that, I don't think anyone would have the patience to wait for us "perfect" our lines.

After talking about our concept and writing a guide, we set out to a nature reserve near the city of Zamboanga one Saturday afternoon. It took only 15-minutes to get there. That's the beauty of living in a small province where everything is within reach.  We went straight to the Boys Scout field to film our opening lines. It took a while to get the shots right, because, even with markers, we kept going outside the camera frame.  And then, we had our lines to contend with. We started filming at 4:45 PM for 3 separate spiels and didn't get them right until quarter to 6. It was getting dark and we hadn't even finished half of our spiels. We  had the resident goat to thank for that. Michael calls him Pavarotti. His loud bleating left us with a lot of useless footage. We had no choice but  to pack up and reschedule for another day.

We woke up very early next Sunday morning so that we could finish everything and enjoy the remainder of our weekend. As we drove to the hills, I saw  a beautiful scene near a bridge. I told Michael it would perfect for our spiel about Koh Samui! I hurriedly stepped down the car to position our camera. As I did so, I stepped on something soft and slippery on the ground. Guess what? I had just landed on fresh dog poo! It was such a warm welcome, hahaha.  The sad part was we didn't bring tissue along. So, we had to improvise by rubbing my slippers on the ground many times before resuming our filming. Michael had a good laugh.

At the Climaco Park, where I filmed Michael, I got bitten by a big spotted mosquito. I suddenly thought of one word--Dengue! I quickly swatted it only to have my palm tainted with warm blood. Remember, no tissue. So I wiped everything on a poor unsuspecting leaf.

When I asked Michael to film me driving the car, he kept backing away for fear that I might hit him. No amount of dollars can make up for a lost limb. I thought he did the shot perfectly and for only 2 takes at that.

Then, we were ready to  film our favorite event of all--the slide! Even before I landed in Zamboanga, I had heard about the Weewee pool, the favorite hang out of Zamboanguenos.  During our courtship, it  was  Michael's dream initiation  for me to wade in its moss-green waters. It was the ultimate test of true love for him.The Weewee pool, called such because the architect is Mr. Wee, is composed of  two Olympic-sized swimming pools. Water comes from the mountains. But beware, it's not as clean as it looks, because algae abounds. We were thinking about either jumping on the diving board or sliding down the kiddie pool. Jumping would be less riskier because we would be able to get to the camera right away. Sliding down was not a good option because the slide was about more than 30 feet and we had to scramble to the top to protect the camera. But hey, sliding down would look more fun so took the second route.

Again we positioned the camera on our foldable chair, all the while praying that the people around us wouldn't think of snatching the new camera. The onlookers were actually very cordial and supportive. They must have thought we were some crazy tourists out to film our misadventures. It was a crucial shot because we couldn't do it a second time. We held our breath and slid down! Soaking wet and shivering from the cold, Michael got to the camera and saw that  it was a perfect shot! Yahhhhooooo!

Filming the scene where we were supposed to pop out of the water was trickier. (Yup, for those who wanted to know-- that was a separate shot, unless you have 2 cameras.)  We filmed it while hoping that the kids who were running to and fro would not accidentally bump the camera. When we packed up and saw the shot, we were not inside the frame at all. We missed the spot and  had to redo it. It was not easy popping out of the water and talking. The water made it hard to speak and look straight to the camera. I must have swallowed a lot of water with algae since we had to do it at least four times.

We finished filming two hours later. When we got to the house, we realized that we were sun burned even if it wasn't that hot that morning and we did not  forget to wear sunblock.

We edited it using Final Cut Express in our Macbook. We're thinking of coming up with a video of our out-takes soon. But then again maybe not. It might be too embarrassing. . . :)

Stay tuned!

Zamboanga Times Features the Ultimate Thailand Explorers!

With a plethora of  problems hounding us daily, it is always refreshing to write about good news. If General Santos' Manny Pacquiao will gie honor again to our country by November 15, Zamboanga City will also have its own glory (and be known worldwide) within this month, too.

We may have had our fair share of negative publicity in the past, but we have been given another a chance to shine in the international scene by November 13.  Thanks to a young couple from Canelar Moret, Michael Paul and Jennifer Cocuaco, Zamboanga City made it in the  international travel competition Ultimate Thailand Explorers. They are the only team from the Philippines who got into the semifinals of this competition organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Among the 192 contestants from around the world, Michael and Jenny's 1-minute audition video caught the eye of the panel of judges who immediately included them in the list of only 25 teams to enter the semifinals. It is no small  feat because only three Asian teams got picked to be in this coveted spot. The two other teams come from our industrialized neighbor Singapore. Majority of the semifinalists are from the US and Europe.

The battle is just heating  up  for Michael and Jenny.  The Ultimate Thailand Explorers is afterall an online voting competition. And yes, you can do something to affect the outcome. Out of the 25 semifinalists, only 5 teams who get the highest votes in their chosen destination will get to the finals.  Deadline for voting is on November 13 at 1 AM.   The past two weeks, Michael and Jenny  were trailing behind by almost 300 votes in their chosen destination, but because of  the outpouring of support from family, friends, online contacts and the media, they are now number one! Our beloved Zamboanga is now leading by 809 votes as of press time. Trailing far behind are contestants from the UK, Singapore, and the US.  Help keep Michael and Jenny at the top by voting for them every 24 hours. As a reward for your generosity, you may even win for yourself the $2,500 luxury travel package and high-tech HTC cellphone that the contest organizers are giving away to two lucky voters. This definitely is a win-win situation and a worthy investment in Zamboanga's pride. Imagine!

To vote, log on and register your details at this website: http://tinyurl.com/mike-jennifer   A confirmation letter  will be sent to your email immediately  by the contest organizers. Open the email and click on the confirmation link which will bring you to the contest's main webpage. Look for Michael Paul & Jennifer's video for Koh Samui near the end of the page and vote by clicking the pink VOTE button. It's that easy.

An adventurous  and fun-loving couple, Michael and Jenny's zest for life is contagious, as one can see in  their 1-minute video (http://tinyur.com/mike-jennifer)  which highlights  the best spots of Pasonanca Nature Reserve.  More than that, they serve as good ambassadors for our city and nation, as they are responsible professionals in their respective fields. Michael, an alumnus of Zamboanga Chong Hua and Ateneo de Zamboanga, took up Hotel and Restaurant Administration in the University of the Philippines. Aside from being a manager and reservations officer of local travel agency 888 Ticketworld, he is also a youth leader, often asked to share his experiences and expertise in the areas of leadership, management and finance. His wife of 1-year, on the other hand, is a graduate of Ateneo de Manila University, who majored in Business Management and Communications, where she was also a Dean's Awardee for the Arts.  As  a writer, her work has been published in numerous glossy magazines and newspapers, including Reader's Digest Asia. Aside from that, Jenny, born and raised in Manila, is also a TV producer and director who has produced magazine and documentary TV shows in the Philippines and China.  Both Michael and Jenny, chosen recently as our country's representatives to South East Asian Youth For Change,  are well-traveled and well-versed in the Asian culture. They are perfect for this competition, which tests the participants' skills in promoting and highlighting the beauty of 5 tourist destinations in Thailand namely Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chang Mai and Koh Samui.

Two weeks into the competition, Michael and Jenny got the Philippine media's attention. Several lifestyle and social writers  from Manila featured them in their blogs, including CNET blogger Joey Alarilla,  travel blogger Anton Diaz and OK! Magazine editor-in-chief Frances Amper-Sales.  Aside from being heralded by the Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP), the  Zamboanga couple  was also featured last Saturday in  fashion icon  Tim Yap's column in  the Philippine Star.  Let's not delay in giving  this  couple our all-out support by viewing, voting and campaigning for their video.  (http://tinyurl.com/mike-jennifer)

Once they get to the finals, Michael and Jenny will be given the chance to personally travel to the Thai island paradise of Koh Samui.  They will document their experiences through articles, pictures and video that will be published to a worldwide audience online.  Your support is crucial even in the finals, because judging is purely based on voters' support. A vote for them is a vote for our beloved ctiy.

So log on and vote for this sweet couple and have the chance to win $2,500. Above all, Zamboanga City will be known around the world.

Thanks for this second article, Kuya Dante!  :D

Wanted: An Authentic Thai Massage

We just got massages in one of the best spas in the world--our home.  We had just flown back from an amazing conference in  Malaysia and we needed to get some time to wind down.  Aside from getting a  deep tissue massage, Michael tried a procedure called Bentosa Cupping Therapy. He had been experiencing back pains lately and he had noticed knots on his upper back, which was caused by the accumulation of lactic acid in his back muscles. The masseuse suggested  Bentosa to get rid of these big, hard knots.
Michael's Bentosa Therapy
After a brief massage, the masseuse put out her armament--a set of 6 glass cups, 6 coins and a lighter. She wrapped a coin in a small white paper and rolled it. She then  put it on Mike's back and lit it with the lighter. Michael's back was  on fire. Acting quickly, the masseuse covered the flaming coin with the cup, extinguishing the fire. She repeated the whole procedure 5 more times. Michael said it felt like having six vacuum cleaner tubes stuck on his back. It felt very good. . . like getting a giant pinch from your adoring grandmother. All the pain melted away.  Michael, whose back now resembled a red lego block,  had a very relaxing nap afterwards.

We can't wait to try an authentic Thai massage in Koh Samui. Last September Michael's cousin  opened the Thai Spa  in Zamboanga City and we were honored to be its first customers. The Thai massage we experienced there  didn't involve the  use any oil or kneading techniques.  It concentrated instead on  pressure points and involved a lot of stretching on a mat on the floor. It is the perfect massage to get in middle of a workday, perhaps on a lunch break, when you need some invigoration. No sticky, oily feel. And instead of sending you off to dreamland, you don't feel drowsy but energized and raring to go afterwards.    (The Thai Spa is located at Nunez Ext., Zamboanga City. Telephone number 992-2513)

Do you know that Thailand now has more spas than any other country in the region?  It was recently named  the "Asian Spa Capital of 2009" by AsiaSpa Magazine. Two of the things we want you to experience with us in Koh Samui are the different massages and beauty treatments. Prepare to be pampered as we show you the different types of spa treatments available. And of course, we'll tell you which ones are worth your time and money and those that you can skip altogether.
Right after our massage this afternoon, even before the masseuse could leave the house,we were  already in front of our computers, eagerly typing away,  excited to update our blogs and sites for the Ultimate Thailand Explorers! That's what a good massage can do--it can soothe, relax and  rejuvenate a weary soul. It's  a strong testament to the healing powers of touch.
P.S.  If you're planning on trying Bentosa, make sure you don't have a formal event or beach outing to attend, because the red spots on your back will take a week or two to fade. :)

L.O.V.E. is in the Air!

Michael has beaten me again! (No, not that kind of beating!) Every 3rd of the month, we have a contest on who will greet the other first. You see, we got married on the 3rd day of October and every month we have this tradition of surprising each other. I woke up at dawn today to find this pink flower and note in my equally  pink childhood bathroom. I think the score  so far is 25 to 1, with me winning over him just once in our 1 year and 2 months as a married couple.

Last night, we received our Koh Samui itinerary from the Ultimate Thailand Explorers support team. They’re doing a great job, updating us with our itineraries, e-tickets and what-have-you’s. We promised to do 3 things in our poll that you would want us not to miss in Koh Samui. Here are the winners: 1 Elephant Trekking, 2 Treetop Ziplining, 3 Samui Rollerball/Zorbing!  We’re putting these into the itinerary and we’ll add the 4th and 5th placers as well!  Koh Samui is one fun-filled island! I wish we can stay longer than 6 days so we can see and experience everything!

As much as we want to travel earlier to Thailand to attend the Royal Ratchaphruek Festival, we decided to stay home, because I’m still recovering from cough and cold. But we’re still wishing, hoping  and praying we’ll meet the king once we travel there this Dec. 8.
Again, we’d like to thank everyone who is religiously voting and visiting this site everyday! We thank you for the comments, suggestions and encouraging words as well. We couldn’t have reached the finals without you. We’d also like to thank the Philippine Department of Tourism for graciously extending their help and support. Thank you Secretary Ace for your generosity!

Blessings,

Flashback Thailand

Thai4
I have just found some old pictures when I was about 15 years old, the first time I went to Thailand.  These are old photos of me (in the maroon shirt)  in the Wat Pho Temple.  Taken way back in 1995, my mom was on a business trip and my brother, sister and I were able to tag along.
95
One thing that struck me before entering the temple was that we were not allowed to point our toes inside the temple.  Reverence to authority is a very important virtue for the Thai people.

My wife and I recently were on a plane and were seated beside a passenger who loves Thailand very much.  He adores the gentleness and respect shown to the King by the people.  I heard the same from another friend who commented that currencies are not usually folded because the image of the King is printed there! What awesome respect!

And so Thailand, I am coming back.

Tokens of Love

Wow! We have reached the 1,000 mark in 4 short days. The last time we checked we were in 4th place. Michael and I were out the whole day to prepare gifts for the Ultimate Thailand Explorers. We're so happy to  know that we made it to the top today (but we are now No. 2!) Thanks to YOU! And thanks to PEP (Thanks, Yas!) and  Yahoo! for featuring us on their  Showbiz page. They made us feel like celebrities. We're speechless. . .

First stop for us this morning was the Department of Tourism. Tourism Secretary Ace Durano was so nice  to have personally  prepared gifts for the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the organizer of the Ultimate Thailand Explorers. Sec. Ace is also into adventurous pursuits and has recently zip-lined in Davao and Danao! He couldn't meet us because he was out of the town today, so he asked his executive assistant Ms. Karen Sanchez to hand us the gifts. They are beautiful! I so want to keep them!  We're not allowed to tell you what the gifts are. Not yet! We don't want to spoil the surprise.

We also went to our favorite bookshop to prepare gifts to the other contestants and the liason officer that the UTE has assigned to us. His name is Big and from his picture in Facebook he looks like a nice young man with a  sunny disposition. We can't wait to meet him and the other contestants. We also have new friends from Bangkok whom we will be meeting for the first time in the welcome party--all 40 of them!  Hmm, it will be a challenge to remember all their names, but we will try.

We received a feedback today from Siampinoy. Yes,we have a strong Filipino community in Bangkok! (Hello, everyone! Salamat sa suporta!). Angilicus told us that some of you are having problems voting after registration.  I'll post a guideline here. Hope it helps. :)

1. After registering,  you can log on to this page: www.tinyurl.com/mikejenkohsamui
2. Look for the "LOG-IN" tab on top of the page.
3. Log in your Username and Password.
4. Then, a pink button with the word "VOTE" will appear below the video screen.

Angelicus and Peachy, both expats in Thailand, reported to us how nice the Thai people are and what a wonderful experience it was for them to work there. We're very glad to hear that! Thais and Filipinos share many similar traits. Like their Filipino counterparts, Thais  are warm and hospitable. They are family-oriented, respectful, religious, very fashion savvy  and they love spicy food! We look a lot like them, too.

This weekend we attended a gathering of athletes, adventurers and sports enthusiasts at our church. We were happy to meet people who share the same passion. Among those present was  Taekwondo champion Japoy Lizardo, who would be competing in the SEA games this December 9.

Michael and I were honored to be in the same boat as Japoy. It's a very big privilege to be able to represent our country in an international competition. Michael and I were given a few minutes to speak at the meeting. We were able to show our  video and introduce  the Ultimate Thailand Explorers competition. Among those who approached us after our talk was Elen, a former expat in Thailand. She had a wonderful time as a  teacher in Bangkok.  She talked about the warmth of the people, the delicious food, the year-round sale and the quality of goods.
Plus, she gave us some tips:
*As Filipinos, we sometimes pat people's head or ruffle their hair to show our appreciation. It's a no-no in Thailand. For the Thais, the head is the top most part of the body and should not be touched casually. Doing so would be disrespectful.
*Using the toes to point to something or someone   is also frowned upon. It's not good to have your foot point to a person. So ladies have to be careful that when they cross their legs their foot isn't pointing to someone.
*To get the restaurant bill, we are used to drawing a square in the air to signal the waiter to get  our check. In Thailand, you use your pointing finger to draw circles! That's how you get your bill.
Elen also shared about the deep love and respect that the Thais have toward the royal family. She was overwhelmed the first time she encountered the  entourage of King Bhumibol in the streets of Bangkok. Unaware that the King was passing by, she was shocked to see everyone on the street stop at their tracks. It seemed like the whole world had stopped moving, Elen described. Everything became so quiet, she thought it was the end of the world! That's how they show their reverence.
After that, Michael and I met up with our new friend-- perfumer Bugsy Lazo (http://emtipiel.multiply.com). We met Bugsy at an internet cafe in Zamboanga City during our campaign in the semifinals. He and his cousins became our instant supporters! The  night we met was the same night we hit first place in votes! Since he's originally from Manila, we met up with him while we were there. The thoughtful Bugsy wanted  to send us off with a gift,  the first we received this Christmas--two bottles of his most saleable perfume! Michael got a scent called Guimba, which means forest in the Tausug dialect. I got a perfume named Sassy, a blend of citrus and vanilla. It smells heavenly. Now we're sure to smell sweet while doing exploring Koh Samui.  Thanks so much, Bugsy!
